What do you want to achieve in your life in the next five years? Whatever it is, you will not achieve it without setting goals.
Goal setting is important as it will keep you grounded and focused. The one problem that many people experience is in setting the actual goals.
It takes great discipline to be able to write down your goals and pursue them.
What is goal setting?
The target we want to achieve. This target is clearly defined and time-delimited.
Setting goals has a stimulating role because it keeps you alert all the time. You’re focusing your mind on one thing at a time. Your mind is under control. You become more involved in your life and you provide, most of the time, unsuspected resources.
You also learn to accept your failures as well as your successes.
But you can’t set goals without first having a vision for your life.
So, the first step in goal setting is to determine where you want to be and what you want to have in your life. From this, you can identify your goals and objectives.
1. What is the one problem with goal setting?
Setting too many goals. This is one of the things that most people struggle with. You get so excited and then you set many unrealistic goals that you can’t achieve.
Later on, you will end feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. The secret of goal setting is the art of focusing on one goal at a time.
2. Don’t set vague goals
One of the problems that people have is setting vague goals. For instance; in losing weight most people state that they want to lose weight.
This is a broad goal and it is unclear what exactly you want to achieve. To be able to effectively set your goals, you need to make them specific.
3. Follow the S.M.A.R.T formula
This is one of the most commonly used methods of setting your goals.
Specific; your goals need to be specific. That is, you need to include what exactly you want to achieve. If you want to lose weight, state the amount of pounds that you want to lose. This will keep you motivated.
Measurable; your goals need to be measured. You need to set an indicator of showing that you are on the right track.
Action oriented; use action verbs when you are setting your goals
Realistic; you need to assess your life before you set the goal. If you set goals that are too big, they will eliminate your motivation for achieving it.
Time frame; you need to allocate a time period for achieving your goals. When you have a deadline, you will have the motivation to achieve them.
4. Write down your goals
When you set a goal, write them down and keep them visible in a place you can see them daily.
Why is it important to write goals?
To reach your goals, you have to have a plan and if you write them down it will become very easy to have a global view of your project.
When you write down your goals, you will be able to define their importance and this will help you to stay focused on what you have to do.
5. Visualize your goals
We have a powerful instrument at our disposal, the mind, and by its very nature, visualizes.
How can you use this characteristic of the mind to achieve your goals?
Write down one of your goals and try to make a story around it by creating pictures in your mind.
Try to describe every detail. Just sit down in a quiet place, relax, close your eyes and begin to visualize all the aspect of your goal and hold powerful positive imagery in your mind.
Try to put images on every detail. Do that every night before you fall asleep and every morning before leaving your bed.
If you can find a moment during the day, take 5 to 10 minutes to practice the visualization technique.
It is very important to let go after your visualization, otherwise, you will create negative energies around the process.
Finally, be mindful of your surroundings, this will keep you alert.
