This quote from Abraham Lincoln is so timely to support the subject of this article. You who have gone through so many trials, are you of the same opinion as Abraham Lincoln?

1. Where do we start?

The mind is a very sophisticated instrument. It keeps all memories and often it projects itself into the future. We constantly think either of the past, in which we see ourselves doing certain actions, or in the future, in which we project ourselves.

If we do not take the time to observe the mind and to understand how it works, we are constantly moving in the past or in the future.

LET’S STOP FOR A MOMENT! Let’s take 5 minutes to do this exercise in a place where you will not be disturbed. The fruit behind the head. If you hear background sounds, it’s ok, let them go.

Focus on the fruit behind your head. In fact, what you are trying to do here, is to stop talking to yourself for a moment.

2. How to be happy alone?

Loneliness has become a serious phenomenon in our society. How many times do we hear in the media that people, especially elderly people, are found dead alone in their apartment?

Loneliness is also a feeling of being isolated from the society and causing feelings of sadness and desolation among these people.

The solitude I am speaking here is rather a desirable solitude. From time to time we need to withdraw from the world to better apprehend it.

Robert Adams said: “For most people to be happy, there has to be a person, place, or thing involved in their happiness. In true happiness, there are no things involved. It’s a natural state. You will abide in that state forever.”

According to Robert Adams, to be happy, you have to decide to be a happy person. True happiness comes from within. This is the key to everything. Life is full of choices and I choose happiness.

3. Take small simple steps each day

Do not be overwhelmed by your negative feelings and do not run away from them. They’re there for a reason because there’s a message you need to understand. But to do that, you have to have tools or you will not be able to handle the situation.

When unpleasant things happen, it’s quite normal to tell yourself that life is hard and sad and that life is against you. But, take this feeling of sadness as a means or a lever to produce something more constructive that allows you to move forward.

Try to explore that old feeling that makes you uncomfortable. Take a moment and try to observe what is going on in your mind. Now you can grasp if you are optimistic or still stressed about your feeling. Now you have two alternatives, which one should you select: take action or remain passive.

You see, the choice belongs to you all the time, it is you who choose. But for this to happen, you have to be an observer while being an actor.

4. Trust yourself

The lack of self-confidence can be a major obstacle to a fulfilling, vibrant and enterprising life. The causes of this lack of confidence can be many.

And what happens at that moment, we try to keep everything deep inside us and these repressed feelings end up one day coming out.

Sometimes it’s not so simple to trust someone else, so, in my opinion, the best solution is to learn how to trust yourself first.

You will grow out of your sorrows if you learn to trust yourself. You will be in a position to better control your own happiness.

What are your weak points? How do you feel when you are in a group? What are the points you can improve, right now? Add more questions to this list if you have any.

Write all these questions on a piece of paper and try to answer them one by one with as much clarity as possible. This will allow you to get to know you better.

Then take one question at a time from your list and do this meditation exercise.

5. What do you need to be happy?

What do you still need to be happy in life? I believe that to be happy this is not a matter of need. Being happy is rather a state of mind. What do you feel deep within yourself, peace or resentment, compassion, or indifference to one another?

In our modern consumer society, it has become very difficult to evade its effects. How can we remain indifferent to the things and comforts that we need to have a decent life?

But science has proved that our intentional happiness does not increase in proportion to the increase of our material objects.
